If you're planning to visit Mendoza specifically for the Alta Montaña excursion, the choice of month can completely change your experience. This guide is different from the generic "best time to visit Mendoza" articles: we only talk about the mountains, when the pass to Chile is open, what views to expect, and how the tour changes by season.
The key question: what do you want to see?
- Maximum snow-covered Andes → July and August (with closure caveat)
- Cristo Redentor open + some snow on peaks → October and November
- Green vegetation in lower valleys + good weather → December to February
- Autumn colors (yellow poplars) → March and April
- Fewer tourists, everything open → September, October, April and May
Month by month: what to expect in the mountains
January - February (high summer)
- Temperature in Mendoza city: 30-35°C (86-95°F)
- Temperature at high stops (Aconcagua, Cristo): 5-15°C (41-59°F)
- Cristo Redentor: open
- Vegetation: green in valleys, arid at altitude
- Snow on peaks: minimal
- Tourists: peak season
March - April (autumn)
- Temperature in Mendoza: 18-28°C (64-82°F)
- Temperature at high stops: 0-10°C (32-50°F)
- Cristo Redentor: open until snow closure (variable)
- Vegetation: autumn colors in poplars, the most photogenic time of year
- Snow on peaks: starting
- Tourists: low
May (late autumn)
- Temperature in Mendoza: 12-20°C (54-68°F)
- Temperature at high stops: -5 to 5°C (23-41°F)
- Cristo Redentor: generally closed due to snow
- Vegetation: last autumn colors
- Tourists: very low
June - August (winter)
- Temperature in Mendoza: 5-15°C (41-59°F)
- Temperature at high stops: -10 to 0°C (14-32°F)
- Cristo Redentor: closed
- Andes: maximum snow coverage, most spectacular views
- REAL CAVEAT: if heavy snow falls and authorities close a section, the tour returns from wherever is open. Potrerillos, Uspallata and Puente del Inca usually remain accessible. Aconcagua access may be limited in extreme events.
- Tourists: very low (except July when Argentinians take winter vacation)
September - October (spring)
- Temperature in Mendoza: 15-22°C (59-72°F)
- Temperature at high stops: -2 to 8°C (28-46°F)
- Cristo Redentor: usually reopens in October or November (year-dependent)
- Andes: still well-covered with snow
- Tourists: low
- Best quality-experience ratio of the year
November - December (late spring)
- Temperature in Mendoza: 22-30°C (72-86°F)
- Temperature at high stops: 2-12°C (36-54°F)
- Cristo Redentor: open
- Vegetation recovering green
- Snow only on high peaks
- Tourists: medium (rising toward December)
The real winter caveat (what others don't tell you)
Most operators don't mention this but it's the reality: in winter, the Alta Montaña tour depends on weather. Pass policy is determined by road authorities:
- If heavy snow falls the night before or during the day, they may close the section from Puente del Inca onward
- The closure can be partial (some km) or total (from Uspallata)
- Decisions are made in real-time; we can't guarantee the full itinerary
- If this happens: the tour adjusts to accessible stops and returns
This is honest information you need before deciding. If your priority is seeing Aconcagua for certain, avoid June-August. If your priority is snow-covered Andes and you accept the risk, winter gives the most spectacular views when weather cooperates.
Best time of day (regardless of season)
Beyond the month, the HOUR matters for photo quality:
- Departure at 7:30-8:00 AM reaches Aconcagua between 12-2 PM, with high sun
- Morning light at Potrerillos and Uspallata is cleanest
- Midday sun is harsh but illuminates the Aconcagua walls best
- Sunsets at Uspallata (on the return): most dramatic in autumn
Special seasonal events
- Aconcagua climbing season: November to March. Not something we offer but the mountain ecosystem is more active (more vehicles, more activity at Puente del Inca)
- Cristo Redentor anniversary: November, pilgrimages
- Argentine winter vacation: July (3 weeks), increases domestic tourism
- Vendimia (harvest) in Mendoza: February-April, attracts visitors combining wine + mountains
Summary: when YES and when NO
- YES ideal: October, November, March, April (best balance of weather + access + views)
- YES with prep: December, January, February (heat in Mendoza, but everything open)
- Possible with risk: June, July, August (spectacular views if weather permits)
- Avoid: no month to absolutely avoid, but September and May are transitional with unpredictable weather
Combining with wine tours
If your Mendoza trip includes wine tours as well, do Alta Montaña first (demanding day) and winery tours on the following days. For the best time to combine wine + mountains, see our general guide to best time to visit Mendoza.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time for the Alta Montaña tour from Mendoza?
September to April is the optimal season: roads always open, Cristo Redentor accessible, varied landscapes. October and April are ideal for low tourist crowds and mild temperatures. December to February is peak summer with green vegetation but higher demand. Winter (June-August) offers spectacular snow-covered Andes views but with risk of partial pass closures.
When is the Cristo Redentor de los Andes open?
Vehicle access to Cristo Redentor is only open during summer season, generally from November/December to April/May, depending on the year and weather. During winter (June-August) it closes due to snow. The exact opening date each year is determined by pass authorities.
Is the Alta Montaña tour worth doing in winter?
Yes, when weather cooperates. The winter experience with snow-covered Andes is visually spectacular and tourist crowds are minimal. But there's a real caveat: if authorities close a section of road due to heavy snow, the tour returns from wherever is open. Potrerillos, Uspallata and Puente del Inca generally remain accessible. Cristo Redentor typically closes.
Are there view differences between seasons?
Significant. Summer and autumn show low snow, with arid ochres and greens in valleys. Winter and early spring have snow-covered peaks with maximum contrast against blue sky — the most photographable. Autumn (March-May, southern hemisphere) brings yellow poplars in lower valleys, a unique chromatic spectacle.
What's the best month specifically for photography?
For landscape photography: March-April (autumn, yellow poplars against Andes), September-October (spring, still-snowy peaks, pleasant temperatures), and June-July (winter, maximum contrast when weather permits). December-February is good for valley greens but less dramatic at altitude.
How many months can I reach Aconcagua without issues?
Access to Aconcagua Park (viewpoint) is open most days year-round. It's the Cristo Redentor zone (higher) that closes in winter. Aconcagua Park remains accessible except in extreme isolated weather events.
Are there special seasonal events in the mountains?
Yes. Aconcagua climbing season runs mid-November to mid-March (not something we offer, but provides context to the mountain ecosystem). Nearby ski centers (Penitentes) operate in winter when snow is sufficient. November sees Cristo Redentor anniversary pilgrimages.
Better to do Alta Montaña at start or end of trip?
We recommend at the start of your Mendoza trip. It's physically demanding (altitude, distances, sun exposure) and best done when rested. Wine tours on following days are more relaxed and better enjoyed after the mountain adventure.
